A very easy (and inexpensive) sport would reduce our appetite, and therefore lose weight. Here is the advice of the scientists.
When we reach our fifties, we sometimes gain a little weight, whether we are a man or a woman. It is during this period that many hormonal changes occur, such as menopause, which upset our bodies. We then find ourselves less attractive with a few extra pounds, and we develop complexes. Worse, this weight gain can have a direct impact on our health, which is already weakening with age. What if we told you that practicing a simple sport could allow you to reduce your appetite, while accelerating weight loss? In any case, this is what researchers from the University of Bristol think, as relayed by our colleagues from Slate in a article. Like what there is not always a need to embark on a drastic diet.
Sport whets the appetite: a received idea?
Before doing physical exercise, especially if it is intense, it is rather inadvisable to eat in large quantities. Certain foods are also recommended before sport, such as fresh fruit, energy bars with dried fruit or even low-fat yogurts. Starchy foods, that is to say pasta and rice, are highly recommended for athletes.
Moreover, it is often thought that sport whets the appetite… Whereas it would rather have the opposite effect. Indeed, during exercise, the body limits the production of ghrelin, the hunger hormone, and increases that of the YY peptide, the one that gives a feeling of satiety. This is linked to the heart rate, that is to say that the more intense the effort, the more the feeling of hunger diminishes.
Running would reduce the feeling of hunger
According to the work of these researchers, “one-time exercises, such as running, may temporarily reduce appetite”. They wanted to know if “the changes in blood flow in the brain induced by physical exercise”had an influence on the feeling of hunger.
Thus, they invited 23 men to pass brain scans, before and after running for an hour. They were then asked to choose between three kinds of images: foods with low energy density (fruits and vegetables, starchy foods, legumes, etc.), foods with high energy density (chocolate, pastries, etc.), and non-food objects. The volunteers more often chose foods with low energy density.
“Our results confirm that individuals are less hungry during and immediately after a sports session”said Alice Thackray, one of the researchers. “It also provides insight into the short-term influence of exercise on brain responses to appetite.”, she added. On the other hand, they would like to deepen their research to better understand the relationship between appetite and exercise, to prevent and manage weight gain.
How to facilitate weight loss?
At any age, lifestyle is an essential factor to take into account. In other words, it is strongly recommended to consume foods rich in fiber, fruits and vegetables, as well as lean proteins. At the same time, we must stay away from sugary, industrial and fatty foods as much as possible, as well as tobacco and alcohol.
