Netflix: this paid novelty will not please you, if you parasitize the account of a loved one
Paying a substantial sum each month to watch your favorite films and series becomes a luxury. The Netflix platform will soon charge “guest” users.
Rising subscriptions, ads and eradication of “guest” users: Netflix is gradually implementing new regulations to bail out the $ 6 billion a year hole caused by the 100 million users who would share their password spends with one or more loved ones, according to Citi analysis in 2021.
Next April, one of them will appear in France in order to put an end to account sharing. Indeed, the streaming platform will charge its subscribers who share their account with their relatives and friends. Bad news for those who took advantage of someone else’s account for free!
Netflix 2023 subscription: prices will soon change
It will take between 3 and 4 euros more per month from April, if you want to continue to share your account with someone who does not live under the same roof as you. Generosity has a price!
When a device located outside your household identifies itself to your account or is used regularly, the platform may ask you to verify it before viewing your program or changing Netflix household. The device using the account is thus confirmed and authorized to do so. At this time, Netflix does not automatically charge a fee if you share your account with someone who does not live under your roof.
Share a Netflix account
The platform reminds that a Netflix account is intended “people who live together in the same household”, include members of the same family or roommates. Exit then the classmates, colleagues and neighbors with whom we are close enough to share something as precious as a Netflix account for free!
People who don’t live in your household will need to use their own account. To ensure this, the platform makes a request for verification of the device (the same applies when a device located outside your home identifies itself on your account or is used regularly). An easy method to thwart for the moment but which is about to disappear.
If the device used to watch Netflix uses the primary account holder’s household internet connection, verification is not required.
Watching Netflix for free will soon be impossible
If we do not know how Netflix will proceed to prevent its subscribers from sharing their Netflix identifiers and codes and, above all, to know if they share them, theassociation UFC-Que Choisir recalls that the platform has access to the IP addresses of its users and can therefore track them as soon as they connect!
“We expect that, as in Latin America, the first reaction of affected users will be to leave the platform, which will impact subscriber growth in the short term. But then households will activate their own accounts and additional member accounts”assures Netflix, which was shunned after the deployment of this feature last summer in some South American countries.
The different Netflix subscriptions
The most expensive Netflix subscription is the family subscription called Premium. For 17.99 euros per month, you have the right to watch your favorite series and films on 4 screens simultaneously. Then comes the Standard rate at 13.49 euros/month for a maximum of 3 screens, the Essential (8.99 euros/month) for 1 compatible device at a time and finally the Essential with advertisements (on average 4 minutes per hour) for 5.99 euros/month.
This last offer is not compatible with all devices and does not concern Youth profiles, recalls the platform in its section Assistance. You can change your offer or cancel your subscription at any time.
