Having fallen in love with the royal and military college of Thiron-Gardais, Stéphane Bern wishes to settle there his final resting place.

An essential television and radio presenter, Stéphane Bern regularly presents several programs, such as Secrets of historysince 2007. Became the “mr. heritage” of the small screen, he also invests in this mission in his free time and acquired, in 2013, the royal and military college of Thiron-Gardais, in Eure-et-Loir. A place dear to his heart which also costs him a lot of money!

Stéphane Bern, very attached to the Royal College of Thiron-Gardais

For ten years, Stéphane Bern has spent a lot of time in the royal and military college of Thiron-Gardais. A place that seduced him in December 2012, as he told Paris Match. “One evening in December 2012, my producer Jean-Louis Remilleux informed me that Albéric de Montgolfier, president of the general council of Eure-et-Loir, had something to show me. This gentleman takes me to the Perche, to Thiron-Gardais, a village of 1,100 inhabitants, and I stop in front of what remains of the former royal military college, built in 1776 and closed in 1793, itself attached to the abbey which has just celebrated its 900th anniversary”he explained.

“The president said to me: ‘Only you can save it, because for ten years now the state has no longer had the means to maintain it. As the building was in ruins, he challenged me: « Make an offer and it will be accepted. » Which enabled me to acquire this historic building for the price of a 30 square meter studio in Paris! Now, instead of paying taxes to the state, I pay for work”added the facilitator.

To buy this building, Stéphane Bern would have spent 300,000 euros and more than 4 million euros to restore it, as he told the Parisian. “I bought it, in very poor condition, for the price of a small Parisian apartment: 300,000 euros. At first, I was told: With 150,000 or 200,000 euros, you can restore it. But there were plenty of problems, like dry rot, that weren’t foreseen. Result: I got into debt beyond my capacity: four million euros to be repaid over 25 years. I refused all public aid. All my money goes there, my royalties, the money from the shows. Here, it’s a bit like the barrel of the Danaides », he revealed. All these expenses forced him to sell his Paris apartment as well as his house in Greece.

The facilitator wishes to be buried in the Perche

In another interview with Galathe host said he had « everything planned » for his burial. Indeed, it is within the royal and military college of Thiron-Gardais that Stéphane Bern wishes to rest. “I’ll be buried here, and I’ve got it all planned out. As the Royal College will return after me to the Stéphane Bern Foundation for History and Heritage, it will no longer be a private residence. I therefore obtained permission from the prefect to have my tomb there.he told our colleagues.

With all the energy he put into restoring the place, he naturally chose it as his final resting place. “So everything is already ready… but there is no rush. I’m not Sarah Bernhardt, I’m not sleeping in my coffin yet! »he added with humor.
