How often do French women have sex?

After 50 years, clichés persist that making love is becoming increasingly rare. The reason that is often put forward? Menopause that affects women, which usually begins between the ages of 45 and 55, and causes changes in their bodies. However, there are a multitude of factors that can make lower libido. A study conducted by Ifop for the newspaper Marianne looked at how often French women have sex.

A less active sexuality for women after 50

To better understand how the sexuality of the French works, Ifop interviewed 7,403 people aged 18 to 69. Researchers have found that there are indeed changes after the age of 50. Among men, the average weekly frequency of sexual intercourse drops to 1.4, while it plummets to 0.9 among women.

Moreover, 24% of men after 50 no longer make love. 28% of them do it less than once a week, 23% once or twice and 18% two or three times. Only 7% of men do it more than three times each week. Unfortunately, these numbers drop even more for women. Indeed, 46% no longer have sexual intercourse after the age of fifty, and 22% have less than one per week.

Are we really less fulfilled in bed in our fifties?

According to another study conducted by Ifop for the DisonsDemain dating site, fifty-year-olds remain quite sexually active. In fact, 39% of people between the ages of 50 and 69 still have sex. They even say they feel much freer than when they were twenty. After all, with age, we learn to assert our desires and we know what we like – or what we don’t like.

Proof that making love does not stop after the age of 50, 63% of single people aged between 50 and 69 consider that sexuality is something important. It is slightly lower (55%) for those aged 70 and over. On the other hand, among seniors, the clichés persist and it is something that remains very gendered. Indeed, 53% of 50-69 year olds still think men have more sexual needs than women – a figure that rises to 59% among those over 70.

However, there is still good news! The French would be more fulfilled in bed as they age. Thus, 59% of people over 50 say they are more free and uninhibited than when they were twenty. With age, you generally gain in experience, and therefore in self-confidence. We also know what we like the most, we know our erogenous zones, our favorite positions… And to spice up the relationship, especially when we’ve been in a relationship for a long time, we open up more to new experiences.

Later, when you retire, you also have more time for yourself and your couple, unlike people who work and juggle responsibilities. According to a study by the dating site Lumen, 22% of people believe that they have become more adventurous in their sex life as they age. In addition, they also take more time to have fun under the duvet, since a report lasts an average of 24 minutes.
