The Ordre de Malte France carries out actions to fight against precariousness and help the most deprived. Food distribution is one of the most developed activities of the association in France. With its food aid actions, the Ordre de Malte France is competing for the third edition of the Prix Pleine Vie in the Commitment category.

Provide daily assistance to the most vulnerable

Since the health crisis and COVID-19, the number of people in precarious situations has continued to grow, a situation that has further deteriorated with the impact of the crisis in Ukraine on inflation and purchasing power. This year, in France, a threshold has been crossed since more than 8 million people now have recourse to food aid (there were 5.5 million in 2018!). New audiences are falling into precariousness and struggling to feed themselves: young people, students, the elderly, single-parent families, precarious workers, etc.

The Order of Malta France carries out numerous actions throughout France to help the poorest to eat their fill. Solidarity actions aimed at combating food insecurity represent almost half of the association’s activities in France. The Ordre de Malte France also strives to improve the nutritional quality of the foodstuffs distributed.

Nearly 13,000 volunteers who intervene every day, everywhere in France

The Order of Malta France has nearly 13,000 volunteers, who work every day throughout France, including weekends. Among these, many retired seniors have chosen to give their time to work within the association. The Ordre de Malte France thanks them for their commitment, essential to carry out its missions of food distribution and listening to the most disadvantaged.

The food distribution is indeed accompanied by a time of benevolent break, attention and comfort, in order to meet a vital need while creating a bond and breaking the loneliness. The association’s volunteers take the time to sit down to share a full hot meal with their guests, to converse and offer them a moment of human exchange.

In 2022, the Ordre de Malte France distributed more than 132,000 meals during social outings (on foot or in vehicles) or during breakfasts organized near churches. The association also had 15 fixed solidarity grocery stores, 9 mobile grocery stores and 3 food trucks to reach isolated people. In addition to food parcels, the association’s grocery stores distribute essential hygiene products. Thanks again to our volunteers for their commitment.
